There are many reasons people begin psychotherapy. Some seek help during a painful life event, while others seek to change longstanding patterns of feeling, thinking or behavior. Some people want to delve deep into the past, while some just want a little support and advice. Some participate in therapy for years and others for just a few weeks; most are somewhere in the middle. While psychotherapy is no magical cure, it is very effective in helping people with many types of problems and goals.
The trend today is superficial, cookie cutter treatment rather than working to understand each unique individual and responding to their specific needs. Many people come into my office having been given a diagnosis (often incorrect) and medicated while their true needs have been ignored. Research has shown that more individualized work produces more lasting effects. This is the kind of work that I believe in, and these principles can be applied to all of the forms of therapy described above.
I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in individual therapy with adults. I am also trained in relational psychoanalysis which allows me to focus on more intensive treatments that allow deeper change. I work with people struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, stress, and trauma. I enjoy working with people from a variety of backgrounds, and I am LGBTQ friendly. I believe that it is essential for you to feel comfortable with your therapist and when we meet I encourage you to ask questions and to express your concerns and reactions so that I can better assist you in deciding on treatment options.
